Best beauty products of 2014

This was meant to be a top 14 of 2014, but me being me, I forgot to include a product in the photo, so there you go. Now let's move on to the traditional post where I show you all my favourites of the past 12 months ...

Haircare

  1. Redken Extreme Anti-Snap Leave-In Treatment - the savoiur of my hair, this is a lovely liquid you put into wet hair, then dry it and it prevents your hair from snapping and gives it loads of shine. It is on the expensive side, around 16€ (well, it's a lot for me!), but so worth it in my opinion. If you have long hair that is prone to breakage, you need it! Find it on Feel Unique.
  2. Tigi Bed Head Urban Antidotes Recovery Treatment Mask - another saviour. I've always had greasy hair, but since it has been color treated I've definitely noticed it drying out. This mask is like a much needed injection of hydration and it makes my hair super soft and manageable. I love it, and it really helps instantly. Price is around 20€ on Feel Unique.

Skin

  1. Lush Grease Lightning - my number 1 helper when it comes to dealing with blemishes. This works overnight or even in a couple of hours, doesn't sting but is instead quite cooling, does not dry out the skin, but reduces blemish size in hours. Smells lovely as well, and only costs around 10€ in Lush stores.
  2. Bomb Cosmetics bath bombs - a new discover that I could not leave out, I just adore Bomb Cosmetics and all of their products, but the bath bombs are true winners in my eyes. They're cheaper than Lush and better, in my opinion! Really strongly scented and an amazing experience in the bath. The one in the photo is It's X-mas, which has a lovely cinnamon smell. Available here for UK customers, and here for Slovenes, price is around 3€.

Eyes

  1. Deborah 24 Hour Mascara - this is a mascara that is either loved or hated. Of course, I'm in the former group as I just love it. It has a ginormous bristle brush and the formula is thick and truly black. It lengthens, but mostly it gives insane amounts of volume. I like to wipe the brush on the side of the packaging though as it dispenses quite a lot of product otherwise. Around 10€ here.
  2. Essence Lash Princess Mascara - surprisingly, this has a plastic brush which I generally hate, but it works very well! The formula is thin, but opaque, and it gives both volume and length. The best thing about it is, of course, the price - around 3€ here.
  3. Urban Decay Naked Basics Palette - I know everyone's all about the second edition of this palette which came out this year, but I'm still swooning over the first one. I love matte shadows and this one has only mattes, it lasts ages and it has a shade for my brows. Plus, it's small and has a mirror. What's not to love? Available on Feel Unique for about 30€.

Lips

  1. Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet - I am utterly in love with these liquid lipsticks. They're insanely creamy, almost like satin, don't settle into the cracks, look pretty and have an amazing selection of colours. My favourites are Pink Pong and Nude-ist. Available here for around 12€.
  2. MAC Lipstick in Lovelorn - I got this back in May and had to include it as I wore it for most of the year. A beautiful rosy, very glossy colour that is really easy to wear and appropriate for every day. Prices vary, I paid around 18€ in Amsterdam.

Face

  1. Catrice Velvet Finish Foundation - another love it or hate it product. It's very high coverage, very creamy, but a little heavy on the face. Good things about it? It covers so well and gives the skin a beautiful finish, like it's porcelain, so matte and just perfect. God, I love it. Plus, it only costs around 7€.
  2. KIKO Soft Touch Blush - I have a really pretty plum one. These are quite pigmented but blend really well, I'd recommend applying them with a fluffy brush and only swirling it once in the product. Really satin-y and just gorgeous, I need more shades. Price is around 8€, get it here.

Nails

  1. Models Own Polish for Tans collection - I was head over heels in love with this collection back in May, and I ordered three polishes. Truth be told, they're annoying. Too thick and hard to apply, but the colours are insanely beautiful true neons. I still love them. Around 6€, available here.
  2. Essie Blanc - a pure white. Looks amazing on tanned skin and really chic somehow, it elevates any outfit! You need to clean up your nails after you apply it as it makes any mistake really obvious, but I still just love this one. Costs 10€.
If you're interested in my favourite perfumes, check out my next post, I mentioned all of them!

Oriflame For Him & For Her

For a while, I've been looking for two complimentary perfumes from the same line, one for women and the other for men. I found an interesting option in the Oriflame newsletter with their Eclat fragrances. What did Tilen and I think of them?

Eclat Femme is a white floral, but not very similar to the other perfumes of the kind I usually go for (like Agent Provocateur and Kim Kardashian). Instead of being a sexy straight-up gardenia and tuberose, it's very mildly floral and quite soft, which I do like, but took a bit of getting used to. Instead of gardenia and tuberose, we have soft jasmine, which almost feels luxurious as it creates a blanket-like effect on the skin - it sounds silly, but it really makes me feel like I'm all wrapped up! A very soft fragrance with a mild sillage but surprising lasting power that will make fans of jasmine and soft fragrances very happy. You can find it on the Oriflame website.

What about the men's version?

Eclat Homme is quite a fresh fragrance with citrus and spices, a really nice perfume that is a tad generic, but will make most men pretty happy, so it's a great option for a gift. With bergamot and amber, plus the addition of woodsy notes, it's quite simple but lovely at the same time. And what does Tilen think?
Seems very spring appropriate, you can wear it everyday as it isn't that strong. Perfect for daily use and I like that it isn't overwhelming as I often get headaches when wearing perfume. Not a favourite of mine, but nice to have on my cologne shelf. I quite like the sandalwood note in it.
I personally think these two perfumes would make a really lovely gift, they definitely won't be a miss as they are scents everyone would like! Check them out on the Oriflame website.
Do you and your man have a complimentary scent from the same line?

OPI Don't Pretzel My Buttons

Just a really quick post today to show you this beauty of a nail polish and tell you a tragic story! OPI is a brand of nail polish I used to swear by back in the day, but with the arrival of brands like Essie, Orly and China Glaze I forgot about it a little. That is such a shame, and now that I've tested out some more of their nail polishes, I'm hooked again. OPI has an amazing brush, an awesome formula and average lasting power (better than bad like most nail polishes which chip on me the same day).

Here we have Don't Pretzel My Buttons, and it's truly the most beautiful nude in my collection. It's very light, but not as light as Orly's Pure Porcelain, for example, and not as brown as some nudes. It's very neutral, not brown, not pink. Just a beautiful soft nude colour. Best part? It's only around 5€ on this amazing website.

And finally, the worst part - as I was taking photos of this nail polish, I dropped it on the floor and it shattered! I was incredibly sad because I had just found my favourite nude and it's so beautiful, plus it was a nightmare to clean. Awful!

I found this nail polish on Fragrance Direct, which is an amazing discount site. Check out their OPI polishes here and don't forget to check out the other offers, they have some amazing things!

Yankee Candle Christmas Wax Tarts

Merry Christmas!

I have a very Christmas appropriate post for you today as I'll be reviewing the Yankee Candle Christmas 2014 wax tarts. I have 6 of them and I wanted to talk to you about the scents and how to use them. Let's get started.

  1. Let's talk about Icicles first. This is one of my favourites from the collection, because it's such a clever scent. At first I thought, dude, icicles are just frozen water, they cannot have a scent! But as soon as I smelled this wax tart, I was a convert. It smells like a forest in the winter time. Snowy, fresh and woodsy. I absolutely love it and it's so unique. You can get it on Yankee Direct for around 1 pound.
  2. Moving on to Silver Birch, this is another lovely scent that smells quite woodsy, but sweet at the same time. It's described as the scent of fall transitioning into winter, and I definitely smell the trees and the sweetness of the changing leaves. If Icicles is too woodsy for you, you'll like the Sweetnes of Silver Birch. Only 1,20 pounds!
  3. Candy Cane Lane is definitely my favourite out of the entire collection. It's pure sweet peppermint with some nice freshness that is not citrusy, but minty! Perfect for Christmas, and I'll be burning this one today, I cannot wait. So inexpensive as well.
  4. If you like Fluffy Towels from YC and vanilla scents, you would love Angel's Wings! Apparently it's really popular as I cannot even find it on the site. It's very sweet, vanillary and still a little fresh with woodsy notes. I like this one too, it's very unique. Try looking in your local YC store, but hurry up if you want it!
  5. Bay Leaf Wreath is another scent that is really unique, but instantly reminds me of Christmas and the wreaths we used to have around the house. It's a green, woodsy fragrance that is quite fresh. I think there might be some citruses in there as well as it really isn't overwhelming, as you might think Find it here.
  6. Finishing up, we have Christmas Garland, which smells exactly like fresh Christmas trees! My family does not have a real tree, but my grandma used to have one and it smells just like its pine needles. Apparently, there's some berries in there too which is just lovely. Find it here.
I also received a burner for these wax tarts from Yankee Direct, who have an amazing and beautiful selection of burners here. Basically, you place an unscented tea light under the burner and place the wax in the bowl above it, and as it burns, it releases a beautiful fragrance. I absolutely adore these wax tarts because they are much more potent than most candles and they'll give you so much scent! It's also a great way to try out new scents before getting the full-size candle.
Which scent reminds you of Christmas?

Top 4 Festive Orly Nail Polishes

It's Christmas Eve tonight! I thought I'd show you some of my favourite Orly nail polishes for the holiday season. I've been a fan of orly for a long time, they have a great thin formula that is always opaque in 1-2 coats, and they dry pretty fast. I'm not the biggest fan of their thin, round brush, but it's perfectly okay. Let's see which colors I love this winter.

  1. Orly Red Flare - This is the most gorgeous and really unique red shade, it's very deep and quite dark, but not vampy yet. Perfect if you want a darker red nail polish but are afraid of going too dark.
  2. Orly In the Navy - what a beautiful blue. I'm wearing it right now and it's opaque with one coat, but despite being such a dark shade it has this beautiful sheen that makes it stand out a lot.
  3. Orly Luxe - a gorgeous, shimmery/glittery true gold. This is amazing because it really does look so luxurious, but is easy to remove, which is definitely not the usual case.
  4. Orly Rage - rose gold, my love ... From the same collection as Luxe, again, easy to remove, and opaque in one coat. These two look beautiful as accent nails as well.
All of these polishes were found on Fragrance Direct and they only cost around 4€ - serious craziness! They have quite a few shades so definitely check them out & order some here.
What's your favourite festive nail polish? & merry Christmas, my lovelies!

Candle Empties

Hello, my name is Živa and I am a candle-a-holic.

In the past few months, I've managed to accumulate an enormous collection of candles and finally, I've used up enough of them to constitute an empties post. I still have 4, which is scaring me a little, because I'm used to having about 482712693 and I feel like I need to buy more ... *serious candle lady problems* Let's get started with the empties now!

I've used up quite a few Yankee Candle candles, the first one being Strawberry Buttercream, which I've reviewed here. This is a beautiful candle with the scent of strawberries and cream which I would love to repurchase. You can find it here.

  1. Next is Yankee Candle Cinnamon Appleberry, a part of their fall collection, which has the most lovely scent of crisp autumn apples and sweet cinnamon. I loved burning this one as it wasn't overwhelmingly sweet but quite fresh instead. Check out more Yankee Candles here.
  2. I also have a Halloween Yankee Candle called Ghostly Treats, not sure if this is still available but it smellled sweet and just like marshmallows on a fire! I loved this one, apparently I'm really into sweet scents when it comes to candles. Check out more Yankee Candles here.
  3. And the last Yankee Candle, Tahitian Tiaré Flower, which smells like my absolute favourite white flower - gardenia. It's very floral and light, and I find that perfect because sometimes floral candles can be very overwhelming, and this one creates a lovely soft fragrance. Check out more Yankee Candles here.
  4. Moving on to Timothy Dunn, I received their Blue Rose candle in a swap. Again, a very floral fragrance which I liked a lot, though it was a lot stronger then the aforementioned YC one. This is a really luxurious candle that comes in heavy white glass and looks amazing in any room. Check out their beautiful products here.
  5. Now for Glade, I had their Wild Mulberry candle which was a lovely fruity scent but didn't last really long - I think I went through it in 2-3 days (oops). It was a nice scent, but if you like Glade candles, I'd really suggest checking out their Christmas collection, they have some amazing scents!
  6. I've reviewed an Ecosse candle before, but this one is a different scent called Homemade Shortbread, that is a really unique sweet and buttery scent. Ecosse candles have had a huge makeover and they look even lovelier now, I would strongly suggest checking them out!
  7. And finally, who knew Muji made candles? And they're amazing! I've had their Grapefruit & Lytchee tin candle for so long that it isn't even available on the site anymore *great job Živa*. It was a really lovely and very fruity & fresh candle that was such nice quality, and surprisingly lasted ages. I loved the scent of this one and the overall quality, it was very strongly scented.

So basically, I've managed to use up 7 candles - I don't know if I should be sad that they're gone or happy I have more space in my room now. All I know is I have an urge to shop for more scents ... Horrible!

Updates, new blog & ask me anything!

I've been absent from the blog for a while, and I finally thought I would do a little update post to let you all know what has been happening with me! I've basically gone from posting every day to being very sporadic, which I'm embarassed, and quite sad about. Hopefully things will change for the better, but here's what's been going on ...

I got a new job

I've mentioned this here and there in passing, but let's take a minute to talk about it now. You know I used to work at Yves Rocher and Cosmopolitan magazine, but it was time for new adventures, so now I'm working at an online cosmetics store here in Slovenia called Click2Chic. It's a fun job, but it takes up a lot of my time as I usually work full days, so it's really hard to find time for posting, as it's winter now and the days are so short.

You can read my posts on the Click2Chic blog

Sorry, they are in Slovenian, but if you'd like to read more of my posts please head to the Click2Chic blog, there's some amazing content on there. This is one of the main aspects of my job and I love it because I got to connect more with the ever so lovely Maja. I hope you like those posts and feel free to ask me about them if you're interesting in something and you don't understand Slovenian.

I started a brand new book blog called Bookterflies

Some people have been following my old blog, Quite Bookish. Really. for a while, but I really wanted to have a more special place so Bookterflies was born! I really hope you'll head on over and check it out, it's so pretty with the new design and there are quite a few reviews up already. I've been reading loads so definitely keep an eye out for even more opinions.

I've been feeling down

As some of you may know, I have depression and with the new job and some other things happening in my life, I've been feeling very down lately. It's nothing critical, but I often find myself unhappy and really stressed, and my confidence has gone down a lot, so it's been hard to post regularly ... Hopefully I'll get over this unpleasantness and I'll be back to happy-go-lucky Živa in no time.

You can ask me anything!

I've never done a Q&A and I finally thought it might be time to do one. I don't know if you really care about that, but just in case you have some questions/requests for me, I'd love to answer them. If there's enough comments I'll do a post, otherwise I'll just answer in the comments. You can ask anonymously by the way, or if you'd rather stay even more private, you can always e-mail me at nothinfancyreally@gmail.com.

Go ahead, ask me anything in the comments!

Parfums D'Orsay La Dandy EDP

I'm finally back! I've been taking a bit of a hiatus because I'm very busy at the moment, but hopefully I'll be back to posting regularly very soon. So today I decided to share a review of a very unique fragrance which is a lovely addition to my perfume shelf! Let's talk about La Dandy.

Parfum D'Orsay is a French parfumerie and I immediately fell in love with their pretty, classic bottles, the interesting illustrations accompanying them and the descriptions of the perfume. I chose La Dandy and waited eagerly for it to arrive in the mail. As soon as I opened it, I knew this was a very, very special fragrance.

I think there is a trend going on in the perfume world, and the most popular ones are gourmands, floral-fruity combinations and so on. Unfortunately, many perfumes have become generic and are really nothing special - which is definitely not the case with La Dandy.

La Dandy is a beautiful citrus & spice fragrance that has a unique blend of notes, one I haven't smelled anywhere before. Initially, you get an explosion of fruits with citruses like bergamot, and peaches, which slowly starts settling down into a creamy mix of cinnamon, cloves and ylang ylang (surprisingly does not remind me of Christmas, but is instead very fresh and lovely). Finally, it settles down with notes of honey and sandalwood

It has a lasting power of 4+ hours on me, and the sillage is moderate, but as I've mentioned time and time again, my skin just drinks up any fragrance so it will probably last longer on you.

If you are looking for a unique, beautiful fragrance, I would look no further than Parfums D'Orsay. This is so beautiful and nothing like any woman has on her shelf already. Also would make a beautiful Christmas or Valentine's day present! You can purchase the perfume here from 75€ - what a beautiful luxury gift!

What is your favourite kind of perfume - floral, sweet, spicy ...?

Revlon Moisture Stains VS Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet

Liquid lipsticks, long lasting glosses ... They seem to be all the rage these days, don't they? I thought I would do a comparison of two more popular brands which both have a product of this kind, and I chose the Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvets as well as the Revlon Moisture Stains. Which product is the winner for me? Let's see their attributes first.

Texture
The Bourjois products are very, very soft on the lips. They almost feel like satin, you barely feel them on and they're easy to apply. That being said, the texture is a little 'different' - it takes a few wears to get completely used to it. The Revlon Moisture Stains, on the other hand, feel like a gloss on the lips. Quite moisturizing when you apply them, but they do dry your lips during the day. They're also a little bit sticky.
Bourjois 1, Revlon 0

Colour selection
I have to say I love Bourjois much more in this aspect. I would love to own every single one of the colours in the Velvets range, while Moisture Stains have some gorgeous shades, but some really weird ones as well. I for one am definitely not a fan of bright orange or brownish, dark nudes, and I don't know any woman who loves makeup that would go for such a shade.
Bourjois 2, Revlon 0

Packaging
This is a hard one. I really love the Bourjois packaging, it's classy and pretty, plus you can see the colour pretty well. But Revlon ... Gorgeous square tubes, which look way more expensive than they actually are. I also love the applicator, which is larger than the Velvets and more bendable.
Bourjois 2, Revlon 1

Lasting power
Another tough decision! Velvets stay a really long time, but they dry my lips out a lot and they settle into the cracks, which doesn't look too attractive. The Revlon Moisture Stains fade, on the other hand, until they end up as a stain.
Bourjois 2, Revlon 2

As you can see, I'm pretty much undecided. On one hand, I love the Velvets, on the other, Moisture Stains are great. But I would say when it comes to the liquid itself, Bourjois is better. Revlon has a better packaging and they would surely be the winner if they expanded their color range. So which one should you get?

Get Revlon Moisture Stains if ...

  • you like glossy textures
  • you like vampy shades or brights (I'd recommend Parisian Passion and Miami Fever)
  • you like classy, sleek packaging

Get Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvets if ...

  • you like long lasting lip products (yes, even with kissing ;P )
  • you want a wide variety of colors
  • you like satin textures

I didn't mention the price, as they are pretty much the same for both products - around 10€. & there you go! I hope this post helped - I find myself quite overwhelmed with the wide selection of all these liquid lipsticks ...
